Contemporary Asian America

As my topic focuses on mental health among Asian Americans, I decided to search up studies of Asian culture and its social impacts.

Contemporary Asian America analyses Asian culture and how that has affected the Asian American community.  Being Asian myself, I found myself being absorbed into the stories provided in this source.  One section that particularly stood out was "Behind the Model Minority".  Author Ocampo uses Jermey Lin as an example to help explain this idea.  Before Lin became a worldwide sensation in basketball, he was an Ivy League student.  Studying at Harvard has proved that Lin strived to do everything with the best of his abilities.  This preservation is commonly tied with Asians, and therefore labeling Asians the "model minority".  However, this stereotype is causing multiple problems for the Asian community.  Although a study had found that most Asian Americans are highly educated and receive above-average income, this study only focuses on six of the largest ethnic group: Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Korean and Japanese.  This research did not include other Asian groups, such as the Vietnamese and Cambodians.  Studies in these smaller groups have found that they have lower graduation rates.  Research like this causes a problem as the general American would group these smaller groups into the "model minority" group, causing a never-ending stereotype.

So far, this source has been helpful in explaining how stereotyping Asians cause problems within the Asian community.  This source has a vast amount of Asian history and I look forward to reading more of its content.

  1. I'm surprised to see Vietnamese people as not being a part of that bigger ethnic group that is supposed to be the "model minority" since I am half Viet myself. How much lower are the graduation rates of Vietnamese and Cambodian people, and are the sample sizes for these groups significantly smaller than the six largest Asian groups?

  2. This is such an interesting topic. I'm curious to see what type of social determinants that Asian Americans face and how that impacts the differing rates of mental health issues in this population. Will you be specifying the mental health outcomes or addressing mental health in a more general level? I'm excited to see the statistics you find to link these factors. -Angel
